Dr Giles Wilson, CTO and Head of Portfolio & Architecture for TV & Media at Ericsson, has been outlining the potential role for 5G wireless networks in television contribution. He says the combination of high bandwidth and very low latency (which has been designed into 5G in order to support IoT requirements) will make it viable to use mobile networks for remote production and news gathering. Wilson also thinks 5G can also become an alternative to fixed-line broadband, delivering high bandwidth into homes where digging fibre into the ground is too expensive.
