According to Indian press reports, Indian public broadcaster Doordarshan will next year target mobile phones using T2-Lite technology, initially in Mumbai and Delhi. The move follows a tender from the broadcaster over the summer for a DVB-T2 Gateway supporting T2-Lite. Doordarshan CEO Jawhar Sircar was quoted as saying that the content for the service would begin with the free-to-air channels currently carried on Doordarshan’s satellite offering, who it was inviting to form a partnership. To begin with, T2-Lite could be made available through a dongle which could be plugged into a mobile phone, said Sircar, who predicted that as soon as telecoms operators saw the service being taken up, they would seek to embed the technology within the phones themselves. Sircar said he estimated that India would have about 225m smartphones by the end of 2014.
